Choosing a Photo Memorial Necklace: Photo, Shape and Engraving

October 27, 2026 4 min read

Illustrative scene of family photographs beside an album and blank note card

A photo memorial necklace starts with a picture you want to keep close. The most useful choice is a clear photo that still feels like the person you remember, paired with a pendant shape and chain length you would enjoy wearing. This guide helps you choose that photo, compare two shapes and decide what, if anything, to add in words.

Start with the face, not the background

Look for an original photo file with a clear face and even light. A familiar expression matters more than a formal pose. Before choosing, enlarge the picture on your screen: can you distinguish the eyes, mouth and outline of the face without guessing?

  • Use the original when possible. Ask for the camera or phone file rather than a screenshot of a social-media post. Enlarging a small screenshot does not restore missing detail.
  • Choose a simple composition. One face or two faces close together are easier to fit than a group spread across a room.
  • Leave room to crop. Keep some space above the head and beside the face. A photo already cut tightly at the hairline gives you fewer choices.
  • Keep a copy untouched. Try crops on a duplicate so you can return to the full image.

If your favorite picture is an old print, scan it or photograph it straight on in even light, avoiding glare. If the face remains blurred, compare another photograph before ordering. A more recent picture is not automatically the better choice.

Match the photo to the pendant

For a quick size check, draw the listed pendant dimensions on paper and hold the outline near a necklace you already wear. Product photographs are enlarged to show detail; the pendant in your hand will be much smaller.

Choose When it fits Details to compare
Heart photo necklace You prefer a smaller heart shape and a close portrait. 23 × 23 mm pendant; adjustable 18–22 inch chain.
Photo dog tag with bottom message You prefer a taller pendant with a message below the photo. 28 × 50 mm tag; 24 inch chain; optional back engraving.

Both featured pieces are listed as 316L stainless steel and offer Silver and Gold color choices. Choose the color that matches the jewelry you or the recipient already reach for.

Engravable Heart Necklace With Picture: catalog example showing front and back
The heart necklace’s catalog example shows how a close portrait fills the front, with text shown separately on the back.

The Engravable Heart Necklace With Picture is a good starting point for a face-focused image. When trying a heart-shaped crop, check the top indentation and lower point so they do not cut into the features you want to keep. A little background can be useful breathing room.

Custom Engravable Photo Dog Tag - Bottom Message: catalog example showing front and back
The bottom-message dog tag separates the photograph from a short front message. Back engraving is optional; wording shown is a catalog example.

The Custom Engravable Photo Dog Tag with Bottom Message offers a taller shape. Try a vertical crop that keeps the faces together, leaving the message area distinct. More pendant height does not mean a distant face in a large group will become clear.

Keep engraving short enough to read comfortably

A name, a meaningful date or a few familiar words can say more than a long paragraph. The heart product imagery shows a text option on the reverse; the bottom-message dog tag explicitly offers a front message and optional back engraving. Check the available personalization fields on the product you choose before placing the order.

Possible wording to adapt includes “Always my dad,” “Love you, Mom” or simply a name and date. These are illustrative ideas, not guaranteed layouts. Keep the final wording within the options shown when ordering, and double-check spelling, punctuation and dates. If your preferred text does not fit, shorten it rather than assuming it can be squeezed onto the pendant.

Think about where the necklace will sit

Measure a necklace you like from end to end, including the clasp, and compare its length with the listed chain. The heart’s 18–22 inch range gives you adjustment; the dog tag lists a 24 inch chain. How either sits depends on the wearer and neckline. For a gift, a necklace they already wear is a more useful reference than a model photograph.

For care, use a soft cloth and store the necklace in its original box or a soft pouch to protect it from scratches. Our care guide for jewelry and keepsakes advises avoiding prolonged exposure to harsh chemicals or saltwater for stainless steel pieces.

Check these four things before ordering

  1. The face remains clear after your intended crop.
  2. The pendant shape keeps the features and people you want to include.
  3. The chain length and color suit the person who will wear it.
  4. The personalization choices and final spelling match your intention.

The heart necklace’s product page currently lists 2–3 business days before shipment. Transit is additional, so allow for both when choosing a gift date and check the current delivery information at checkout.

If you are buying for someone else, you can invite them to choose the photograph together with you. If a display keepsake would suit them better, our memorial ornament guide explains another option.
