No, it is not too late to send a sympathy gift simply because the funeral has passed. A thoughtful note or keepsake can acknowledge someone’s loss weeks or months later, or mark a birthday or anniversary in a later year. You do not need a larger gift to make up for the time that has passed.
The useful question is what you want to say now: “I just heard,” “I’m still thinking of you,” or “I remember them, too.” Start there, then choose a gesture that fits your relationship.
Reach out when you learn the news. Briefly acknowledge that you heard late, then turn your attention to the person and their loss. A long explanation of why you did not know can make the message more about your absence than their loved one.
Example to adapt: “I only recently heard about your dad’s death. I’m so sorry. I remember how warmly he welcomed everyone at your house, and I’m thinking of you and your family.”
Only include a memory if it is yours. If you did not know the person who died, “I’m sorry to hear about your loss. I’m thinking of you” is enough. You can send that message today and decide on a gift separately.
You can reach out again even if you already sent condolences. Choose something connected to the person being remembered, or offer one specific kind of help you can actually provide.
A copy of a photograph with the place and year written on a separate card gives the recipient something personal to keep. An offer to handle a familiar errand may be more useful than an object. If you choose a keepsake, explain the connection in a sentence rather than leaving them to guess why it arrived.
Example to adapt: “I found this photograph from our summer picnic and wanted you to have a copy. I’ve been remembering your mom and thinking of you. There’s no need to write back.”
If you had meant to reach out earlier but kept putting it off, a brief “I’m sorry I didn’t write sooner” is enough. You do not need to ask the recipient to reassure you about the delay.
A birthday, anniversary or familiar season can give a later gift a clear purpose. You can also write on an ordinary day when a real memory comes to mind. Frame the gesture around remembering, without suggesting that the recipient should feel a particular way by now.
Example to adapt: “I remembered that your sister’s birthday is this month. I wanted you to know I’m thinking of her, and of you.”
If you are unsure of a date, check it before engraving it or mentioning an anniversary. A note without a date is better than a guessed one. For a Christmas remembrance, our guide to choosing a gift for the first Christmas after a loss offers occasion-specific ideas.
A gift is optional. Respect any request the family has made about gifts, donations or contact. The timing alone does not create an obligation to purchase something.
Our Engravable Heart Necklace With Picture has a 23 × 23 mm heart pendant and an adjustable 18–22 inch chain. Its small photo area makes a clear, close portrait a more useful starting point than a distant group shot.

If you do not have the right photo, offer to choose one together. That invitation can be the gesture you make now; the finished necklace can follow. Our photo memorial necklace guide explains cropping and other ordering decisions.
Our There’s A Little Bit Of Heaven Christmas Ornament may suit someone who uses heaven and angel imagery in remembering their loved one. It has angel wings on the front and a fixed message about a little bit of heaven in the home on the back. It is not a name or photo personalization option.

The zinc-alloy ornament measures 2.75 × 2.5 inches and includes a box. You could add your own separate note about a decoration, song or Christmas visit you remember. If that wording does not fit the recipient’s beliefs, a photograph and your own words offer another approach.
Sign your full name if the recipient may not recognize the sender, and confirm the delivery address if you have not used it recently. If you want to include a personal letter, have the gift sent to you so you can add it yourself; do not assume an online order includes a handwritten message.
For a date you hope to mark, allow for both preparation and travel time. The heart necklace’s product page lists 2–3 business days before shipment; shipping transit comes afterward. Check the current delivery options when ordering. You can send your note first if the keepsake will arrive later.
You do not have to find the perfect gift before acknowledging someone’s loss. Write what brought them to mind, include a true memory if you have one, and let that guide any keepsake you choose. If you would rather begin with a message, these condolence text examples can help you find a starting point.
